I just couldn't stay away from the freelance game. While most of my work at Signal Advertising was comprised of Programming & Development, I had a longing for modern design. In the summer of 2009, I revamped an old website for a local Vermont business. I created a very unique content management system (CMS) that its employees would utilize to manage multiple facets of its business. Working with a small business, and helping them in ways which they truly could not afford at city-based firms, gave me pride in that I could actually help to progress otherwise unreachable goals.
In early 2010, I fell in love with the idea of creating a CMS that was both intuitive and user-friendly. I envisioned a system that would allow a client to perform & track virtually everything they could possibly imagine through a single secure system: site analytics, product/purchasing analytics, expense tracking, blogging, form creation & reporting, user management, file-system management (from documents & images to video); the complete content management system. Just months later, I had developed multiple content management systems, and I had a foundation for providing an array of very advanced Social Publishing Systems for my clients.

Over three years at Signal Advertising, I really had the opportunity to hone my skill-set and expand it exponentially. At first, I was very surprised to find that such a small company stationed in Vermont had expanded its clientele across the entire United States and worked with some pretty big names. My opinion soon changed as I experienced the caliber of its leadership and the expertise in its tightly-knit staff.
In the late autumn of 2010, my wife was offered a teaching job in the Boston area, that we just could not pass up, and off we went. I still perform a considerable amount of work with Signal and very much consider myself to be a Signalite at heart. I will forever be grateful that Signal took in a wingless developer and helped him grow into an advanced programmer with developer skills aimed at perfection of modern & future web standards.

Straight out of college, I knew landing a job in Sport Journalism was going to require searching for the Holy Grail, not to mention print media is a dying industry. I figured I really needed to pick up some new skills, and had been designing & programming video games since I was 15. That's when I picked up a plethora of HTML & CSS Design books. I delved right in and simply could not get enough, and thus began my freelance career as a web designer/developer.
As a very green freelancer with a BA in both Communications and English, it was hard to stand out from the web-design crowd with a portfolio of print design and writing clippings. At times, it felt like I was doing the work for free as, yes, I was that newbie on the freelance boards putting a modest $2,000 proposal to shame with a measly "Pick me! Pick me!" $300 bid. I might as well have worn a sign that exhibited "Green but will Work for Free," however, this really allowed me to build up my skills and begin to develop a professional portfolio.
